Sellwood Scamper 5k

Our "bling" for the race!
This morning was the first annual Sellwood Scamper 5k event (3.1 miles) celebrating the grand opening of a new Foot Traffic store in Sellwood (Southeast Portland). We were blessed with AWESOME weather and an AWESOME race! The route was entirely through neighboorhood streets with some pretty great views. It was definitely a route I would run again! Run?! Did I say "run"?! Yes I did! We did it!! Nanette, Sue and I RAN almost the entire 3.1 miles! We walked a couple blocks after running the first full MILE and then walked again for a couple of blocks while climbing a big hill. Other than those two walking moments, we RAN, RAN, RAN, even going into a FULL OUT SPRINT for the last several yards! GO US! We had a blast!!

Results of this great effort:  3.1 miles in 37:15 minutes, averaging 12:00 minute miles! WOOOOO-WHOOOOO!

Today we. were. RUNNERS. and I am so, so proud!

Anything is possible!

What a difference a day makes!

Yesterday we had this...

34 degrees

Today we have this...

56 degrees

Wow. Such crazy weather around here! I have a 5k event tomorrow morning and it is supposed to be nice. Hopefully that is correct but you never know around here... obviously. On Sunday, we are walking 12 miles with Vancouver Fit and it is supposed to be raining again.  :(

March SNOW Showers

Are you kidding me?! This is MARCH, correct?!  I woke up to this...

Yes, it's beautiful. HOWEVER, it IS March and I have been so excited to see all the buds and new growth on the trees! And, my poor evergreens... they were just getting their roots firmly planted in the ground and were standing tall but have broken free of thier support posts and look pretty sad about the whole situation. Old Man Winter... please go away!

We seriously could use some sunshine and heat around here! The Vitamin D suppliments can only go so far. My mood is soooo much better when I see that bright, firey orb in the sky! It's up there, I know, but it needs to be a bit more visible. Burrrrr....

Taking me back in time

I always love a good concert and Sunday night was no exception! My daughter invited me (I'm a lucky mom!) to the Blake Shelton concert in Portland and it was four hours of boot-stompin', drink-raisin', yee-hawin', hat-tippin', great country music! I love Blake's music as well as his personality. He is very comical! He talked between songs and even stopped in the middle of some to say something on his mind. He likes to cuss, drink and deer hunt ("and not with a camera... I like to shoot 'em!). His conversations took the concert to such a personal level. He seemed like just an average guy talking to his friends up there... not the big country star that he really is!

Opening for Blake were two spectacular artists, Dia Frampton and Justin Moore. Blake was Dia's coach on The Voice last season and she ended the season as the first runner-up. Blake obviously believes in her talent! He said Dia "earned the right to tour with him on his Well Lit & Amplified tour." How cool is that?! She really is great and I can't wait to hear more of her music! Justin is a total cowboy "from a town of 300 people" (Can you even imagine?!) and got the crowd hoppin' before Blake took over the stage. (Seriously... Justin could have had his own show!) Dia and Justin each returned to the stage to sing a song with Blake. We also had a surprise visit from Blake's wife, Miranda Lambert!  It was a great concert from beginning to end! Not to mention... we had fantastic seats!! FANTASTIC SEATS!

Going to this concert certainly took me back in time to my childhood. I grew up in Texas and loved country music, cowboys, and the whole "being southern" thang. My family traveled to West Texas every year and went deer hunting (not that I could ever do it now, mind you) with my grandparents. Spending time in the Big Bend are some of my very favorite childhood memories. As much as I love living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, the South, it's music, it's laid back lifestyle, the accents, the cowboys (oh yes, the cowboys!), etc. still - and always will - pull on my heart strings. Big time.

Thanks Brittany - for taking me along and letting me boot-stomp my way through part of my past! I loved every minute of it!

Two of THOSE days

You know those days when you feel gloomy, tired and lazy? Those days when you dwell on what you haven't accomplished rather than what you have? Those days when you feel like eating everything in sight? Those days that you do EAT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT?! Well I've had TWO of THOSE days. TWO.

I watched Biggest Loser on Tuesday night and despite everything the contestants put into their week, none of them lost enough weight to reflect all of their hard work. How disappointing for each one of them.

I got on the scale Wednesday morning for my Weigh Day Wednesday only to see the same exact numbers (157.2) I saw the week before. Not an ounce was lost. Despite the 9.3 mile walk/run race on Sunday... despite the extra miles put in during the week... despite the fact that I was nearly perfect on my eating plan... I lost nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada. How disappointing...

Since yesterday morning I have been eating my way through the kitchen, the pantry, and even went through a drive through (GASP!!!!) for a fruit smoothy! I stayed away from the meat and dairy but WHEAT... I had my share (and your share, and your share, and YOUR share too!) The sugar is what I was really after and wow, I have certainly paid the price. I went to bed with an awful stomach ache but yet I got up and did it again. Now I feel sick, tired, lazy, drained, bloated, ugly, fat and so much more. How disappointing...

I am not on friendly terms with that scale unless I'm losing but I really need to stay strong and just roll - no pun intended! - with the ups and downs. They are unavoidable. And in this case... I needed to just be happy I didn't gain instead of being so disappointed that I didn't lose.  But I was... disappointed... and it really bothered me... to the point of binge eating (such an ugly picture, isn't it?). Clearly I

... And just like that, an abrupt end came to my sniveling, whining post above. Something much more important and much more disappointing than my stupid numbers on the scale demanded my immediate attention. There is nothing like a slap of reality to put things back into perspective.

Whining has come to an end.

Fort Vancouver 15k

Although I have walked 9.3 miles MANY times, this was my first 15k event and my first time to participate in the Fort Vancouver event. It was fantastic! The route was very nice with a good mixture of hills and flat areas. (I love hills... they change things up for my leg muscles!) The route was extremely well marked and volunteers were exactly where they were needed to be sure you followed the proper route - for those that might not be looking at the signs! There was a 6k, 10k and 15k all going on at the same time with some areas along the route being used by all three events. It could not have gone any smoother! I have nothing but praise for the event's coordinators! A big job very well done! Kudos! (Thank you Doug - our Vancouver Fit leader - for being out there on your bike and encouraging us along with your positive words and big smile!)

I felt great and full of energy this morning and was high on the excitement of doing another event! I had a mindset to see how fast I could actually go today. I wanted to really push myself and I did. In fact, I am a bit sore now and I'm usually not after an event (except after the BIG ones of 26.2 miles!). I pushed the entire time. I am a walker but today, I actually was a part-time runner! I am a slooooow runner, yes, but I ran! I have to guess but I would say I ran off and on for at least half of the 9.3 miles! That is a huge accomplishment for me! There were times that I would be walking and have the need and desire to run again... it felt better to me than walking! Whoa. Who am I?!

Along side me the entire way were friends, Sue and Nanette. Sue is a longtime walker and Nanette is a "newbie" this season. This event was Nanette's very first event. She crossed the starting line and the finish line at the exact same times Sue and I did so to say she did well on her first event is a major understatement! SHE. DID. FANTASTIC!

At the finish line we congratulated each other and Nanette said, "When's the next one?! Sign me up!" haha Yep... she has the fever!  ;)

Our time to complete the 15k was 2:05:21, averaging 13:20 minute miles. This is my best overall average E-V-E-R!  I am proud, proud, proud!

Sue, Me and Nanette

Congrats to my other friends, Linda and Cindy, for a race well done too! WE ALL ROCK! ;)

My long term goal has always been to run a half marathon... all 13.1 miles of it. I will eventually do it, even if I am a slooooow runner. My short term goal is to run a 7k event (4.35 miles) - the whole thing - in August. I am well on my way to being able to accomplish that!

As for my back and running... I know it isn't the brightest idea because honestly, I am not supposed to be running BUT, well, I am. I would rather live hard now and ENJOY life as I want to than to LIMIT myself and never experience this awesome life I am currently living. I cannot stop and hold myself back. I simply can't do it. If I pay the consequences later, I will have TRULY ENJOYED the route I took to get there. No regrets. Enough said.
